The Pulaski Bridge: A Brief and Strange History
Assemblyman Joe Lentol has been asking the department of transportation to install a dedicated bike lane on the Pulaski Bridge, which crosses Newtown Creek to connected Greenpoint to Long Island City, and finally the department says its Bicycle and Pedestrian Program unit (!) is studying the matter. Currently the bridge has six lanes of traffic and a walkway shared by cyclists and pedestrians; Lentol would give one of those lanes to bikes. But what is this crazy drawbridge? Where did it come from? What has it seen? Turns out a few pretty weird things. [photo]
