21 Ways to Spend Your Teeny, Tiny Tax Refund
- Rory Gunderson
- This is all that’s left after eating dumplings at Aska.
11) Oysters: Yeah, this is a no-brainer. You can head over to Maison Premiere and slurp down $1 oysters during Happy Hour. You probably are only going to want about a half dozen, which is good, because you’ll want to tip your bartender. Oysters are the quickest way to consume something and feel immediately luxurious. Enjoy.
Maison Premiere; 298 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg
12) Scuttlebutt: Oysters are amazing, obviously, but sometimes you want something that will just stick to your ribs, you know? The Scuttlebutt sandwich at Saltie’s will do just that. It’s stuffed with hard-boiled eggs, cauliflower, feta cheese, pickles, black olives, capers, and slathered with aioli. And! It’s only $8. Which is good, because you’re going to need to spend those extra two bucks on gum or breath mints, because that combination will make your breath stink.
Saltie; 378 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg
13) Chocolate: Ok. So there are better and more efficient ways for me to tell you to spend ten dollars on food than to buy one fancy bar of chocolate. But, alas, I am not a reasonable or responsible financial advisor. If I was, perhaps I’d have more than ten dollars to my name, you know? Anyway. Splurge. Who knows when you will have ten dollars to spend just on chocolate again? Maybe never. And, also, you might die tomorrow? We all might? Eat some chocolate. Buy it from Mast Brothers. Those chocolate bars cost ten dollars, but, really? It’s worth it.
Mast Brothers; 11 N 3rd Street, Williamsburg and other fine food purveyors
14) Tacos: Perhaps an obvious cheap eat, tacos are still worth mentioning here because they are the perfect fucking food. And Chavelas in Crown Heights does them really well. At only $3 a taco, you can order three. THREE! I recommend the Nopales, the Hongas con Rajas, and the Papas con Chorizo.
Chavelas; 736 Franklin Avenue, Crown Heights
15) Dumplings!: Aska is one of Brooklyn’s most talked about new restaurants, and deservedly so. And while dinner there will set you back more than ten dollars, the bar menu is really reasonably priced and the food is super delicious. My favorite thing on it is the Potatis Dumpling, which are stuffed with pork and come with a side dish of lingonberries and farmers cheese and just melt in your mouth. They are incredible. And only $6. So they are also a deal. Feel virtuous!
