Paul Mescal Is Coming to Brooklyn in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’
The production will run at BAM from February 28 through April 6.
Paul Mescal, the rising Irish actor who starred in Hulu’s Normal People and the Oscar-nominated Aftersun, is about to make his American theater debut in Brooklyn, according to the New York Times.
Mescal will reprise his role as Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams’ classic play A Streetcar Named Desire in a Brooklyn Academy of Music production directed by Rebecca Frecknall. Performances of Streetcar will kick off next February 28 and run through April 6.
According to Playbill, in addition to Anjana Vasan playing Stella Kowalski and Patsy Ferran reprising her role as Blanche DuBois, the cast will also include “Eduardo Ackerman as Pablo Gonzales, Janet Etuk as Eunice Hubbel, Alexander Eliot as Steve Hubbel, Gabriela Garcia as Flower Seller-Nurse-Singer, Tom Penn as Doctor-Drummer, and Jabez Sykes as Young Collector.”
Mescal starred in Streetcar at London’s Almeida Theater in 2022, before it moved to the West End in 2023. It will return to the West End before it transfers to BAM, running from Feb. 3 to 22, 2025.
A Streetcar Named Desire debuted on Broadway in 1947. Set in New Orleans, it follows the eventual downfall of Blanche DuBois, a Southern belle who moves in with her sister and brother-in-law. The trio often clash in violent interactions as DuBois slowly loses touch with reality.
The 2022 revival won three Laurence Olivier Awards in 2023: Best Revival, Best Actor for Mescal, and Best Supporting Actress for Vasan.
