Mekelburg’s is Closing for Good Next Week
A year and change since closing its original location in Clinton Hill, the remaining outpost of the specialty grocer is calling it
The Williamsburg location of Mekelburg’s, a specialty grocer and market with an unbeatable babka and some of the best hot chicken you’ll find anywhere in the city, is closing.
Its team revealed on Instagram Friday morning the store’s final day in operation will be January 1, officially ending a run that began a few neighborhoods south a decade ago. “Mek’s opened its doors in 2015 in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn with big dreams, loud music, and a whole lot of heart—and now, ten years later, we’re preparing to close our last set of doors in Williamsburg,” reads the announcement (see below). “Ten years of feeding people we love. Ten years of regulars who became family, neighbors who became friends, and first-timers who somehow always found their way back. Ten years of memories made over babka, hot chicken, wings, beer, trivia, late nights, early mornings, and everything in between,” they added.
The announcement arrives just a year and change since Mekelburg’s shuddered its initial location at the corner of Greene Avenue and Grand Avenue in Clinton Hill. The Williamsburg outpost opened in 2022 across from Domino Park on Kent Avenue, bringing the babka, the beer selection, the breads, and a slate of renowned sandwiches (that porchetta and brocolli rabe was one for the books) to the then newly developed Williamsburg waterfront.
Mekelburg’s, sadly, joins a number of 2025 culinary casualties in North Brooklyn, including Fette Sau and Blue Hour. There were no plans for a next chapter or revival shared at the time of publishing.
