Brooklyn Brief: BRIC Jazzfest returns and ‘Nightfall’ comes to Green-Wood Cemetery
Plus, have you seen this missing bassoon?
Hey, it’s Fashion Week Brooklyn. You’ll want to bundle up as you dress for it, though, as temps have dropped.
Here’s what you need to know to start your week.
In the news
- Reggie “Combat Jack” Ossé’s legacy lives on in a section of Bergen Street renamed to honor the legendary media entrepreneur and hip hop powerhouse. And now, he’s forever immortalized and celebrated through a new mural by Bed-Stuy Walls.
- Brooklyn Assembly Member Robert Carroll (D, the 44th district) secured $50,000 from the state to continue the Brooklyn Public Library’s adult learning education and training programs, reports BKReader. The funding will go toward training library staff on best practices to help adult learners.
- Williamsburg’s Oko Farms received word that their site is being reclaimed to build a new waterfront skyscraper, reports Gothamist. Oko Farms provides low-income Brooklynites free vegetables and fish grown on the property. The Farm has about six weeks to relocate.
- Professional bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck had her $50,000 bassoon stolen two weekends ago in East New York, reports Pix 11. Schoenbeck was dropping off instruments for a children’s outreach program at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music when someone swiped the woodwind instrument from her car.
- Amazon Ads and the advertising agency Anomaly are giving Brooklyn small businesses the big-budget treatment with new posters placed around Penn Station, reports Muse by Clios. Greenpoint’s Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop and Red Hook’s Hometown Bar-B-Que are up first — and are featured in Hollywood blockbuster-style posters at the station.
- Fort Greene was named one of the nicest places in the US, reports NY Post. Reader’s Digest voted Fort Greene as a hip place where it’s cool to be kind. The neighborhood ranked just behind Provo, Utah, which worked together to turn around its youth suicide epidemic.
- A new comedy club recently opened in Bushwick, reports Bushwick Daily. The Bushwick Comedy Club is BYOB and books comedians exclusively through video submissions, to avoid mediocre line-ups. Club co-owner Kyle Gillis said sometimes bookers pick comedians simply because they’re friends and that it’s leading to “mediocrity” in the city’s comedy scene.
- New York’s Department of Transportation revealed its vision for seven different trenches and viaducts under the 10.6-mile-long BQE, reports Brooklyn Paper. The DOT proposes capping the trenches in Bay Ridge, Carroll Gardens, and Williamsburg to reclaim space for those communities as they’re currently divided by the expressway.

@bklynmavens If you haven’t heard, The Brooklyn Museum recently celebrated their 200th anniversary!! Ayeee ✨ When you visit, you’ll peep a few new additions, from their new café to two new exhibits! We’re a little biased, but the Brooklyn Artists exhibition is just perfection. We love seeing how others view Brooklyn through a variety of ways, including art. If you’ve seen it already, drop your thoughts! And when we got to Toward: Joy—A New Framework for American Art and saw @blkmktvintage curate this space that greats you once the elevator doors open, we knew we would love this one too. Congrats @Brooklyn Museum ♬ Write This Down (Instrumental) – SoulChef
