The Brooklyn Brief: Diddy on suicide watch, Brooklyn Football Club hires its first coach
Plus, new images of the train that will (eventually?) connect Brooklyn to Queens, and RIP Yosef Gottlieb
It’s Monday — it’s fall — and the temps will be 58 degrees tonight. Let’s get into the latest happenings around Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn Nets signed Yongxi Cui to a two-way contract over the weekend. Plus, Brooklyn might be ahead of the curve in the battle over tipping in 2024.
All of this and much more in your Brooklyn Brief.
In the news
- Sean “Diddy” Combs was placed on suicide watch Friday as he remains in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, reports Mediaite.
- Kehlani brought her highly anticipated Crash World Tour to Barclays Center on Friday night. Featuring special guests Flo and Anycia, the tour follows the release of her new album, “Crash.”
- The MTA shared renderings of The Inter-Borough Express, a new electric train that will maybe, hopefully, eventually connect Brooklyn and Queens, reports Time Out New York. The proposed route will be a 40-minute door-to-door trip between the boroughs.
- Brooklyn Football Club announced the hiring of Jessica Silva as the first head coach of its women’s team. Silva signed a two-year contract, beginning with their current inaugural 2024/25 USL Super League season. The Portuguese-Canadian Coach brings international experience to the women’s team, having been an assistant coach for Canada’s U15, U17, and U20 women’s national teams.
- Yosef Gottlieb of Williamsburg’s Gottlieb’s Restaurant passed away on September 19 at the age of 75. Since 1962, Gottlieb’s has been famous for its chicken liver, pastrami sandwiches and goulash.
- The Brooklyn Horror Film Fest announced the line-up for their ninth year, taking place next month at both Nitehawk locations, reports The Playlist. This year’s Leviathan Award, Brooklyn Horror’s tribute to the genre’s luminaries, will go to indie horror maestro Larry Fessenden, who will be in attendance.
- The attorney for Derell Mickles said he is still bedridden and cannot walk, reports Gothamist. Mickles was shot by police last weekend inside a Brooklyn subway station for skipping subway fare and threatening police with a knife.
- Sound Tribe Sector 9 returned to Brooklyn after two years when they played at Brooklyn Steel on Friday night. The Santa Cruz band brought the house jam and played tunes they hadn’t performed in nearly 20 years, such as “Muir Soul.” Jamie Huenefeld wrote a review of the show at GratefulWeb with photos by Killahwave.
- The Brooklyn Nets signed Yongxi Cui to a two-way contract, they announced on Friday. The 21-year-old Cui (6’6”, 210) joins Brooklyn after going undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft.
- Is Brooklyn the frontline for a détente in the great tipping war of 2024? Sey Coffee in East Williamsburg paved the way in 2013 when they asked customers to stop tipping their baristas. Why? Because they pay their employees fair and competitive wages. As Gothamist reports, other coffee shops like Passionfruit Coffee in Bed-Stuy have joined the movement and removed tipping options from checkout screens. What do you think about this no-tipping trend?

Diddy is being held in the ‘worst prison on earth’ which is in Brooklyn and close to Junior’s which is the cheesecake place he made the contestants from MTB walk there at 10 PM to get him some cheesecake. This almost feels poetic.
