Ella Emhoff (nearly) steals her Momala’s inauguration day thunder
The 'First Daughter of Bushwick' is an L.A. native studying at Parsons who rocked a scene-stealing frock on Wednesday
The inauguration of President Joe Biden was chock-a-block with scene-stealing moments: From Vice President Harris’ historic swearing-in to poet Amanda Gorman’s radiant recital to, well, Bernie’s mittens, there was plenty competing for our attention.
So it says something that Bushwick local (and L.A. native) Ella Emhoff set tongues wagging amid all that. Vice President Kamala Harris’ step-daughter was officially introduced to the country, wiggling her eyebrows and wearing a bejeweled Miu Miu coat with a lacy white collar that instantly lit up Instagram.
“Ella Emhoff … won the inaugural fashion show,” wrote the New York Post of the look, designed by Upper West Sider Batsheva Hay. She “showed everyone else up at the inauguration,” crowed Town & Country.
About said town and country: In a moment so rife with political divisiveness it may seem trivial to see so much gushing over what some wags have called “the First Daughter of Bushwick.” But Wednesday was a day of relief and release for many.
Emhoff, 21, is the daughter of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff from a previous marriage, and a student at Parsons School of Design with a cow tattoo and an affinity for knitwear.

She was named for singer Ella Fitzgerald. (Her brother Cole Emhoff was named after a jazz giant John Coltrane.) Both Emhoff kids refer to Vice President Harris as “Momala” because they didn’t like the word “stepmom,” Harris herself wrote in an article in Elle magazine.
In a city where President Barack Obama’s tan suit notoriously rankled Republicans, it will be interesting to see how Emhoff’s bold looks go over in D.C.’s post-Trump halls of power.
