Earlier this year Melaena Cadiz released her third and most fully-formed album Sunfair–it flew a bit under the radar so we included it in our albums from the first quarter that you might’ve missed. This record is the result of Cadiz’s decision last year to leave New York for the West Coast, a choice spurred by a writing workshop at Joshua Tree where she wrote the bulk of the songs on the record. They feel dusty and magical in the same way that gorgeous stretch of California wilderness does, and the album title itself is drawn from a road that wound through Joshua Tree.
Despite the influence of the desert though, there are clear whispers of Cadiz’s new home in Los Angeles on the record. As tribute to her East Los Angeles neighborhood, the video for “Goes Without Saying” that we are premiering today was shot almost exclusively in Glassell Park and Lincoln Heights. Directed by Sadie Holliday, the clip is a very intimate portrait of the area that watches like a home movie. It was shot on super 8 film, which further lends a gritty and homespun feel to the clip.
