The Weirdest Sign in Downtown Brooklyn: An Investigation
The Beavis and Butt-heads living within me are obsessed with this sign on Jay Street in which a grinning Dr. Leon Nitkin advertises black-tie breast checks. Every day, he smiles down in his bow tie and tuxedo and gelled hair from the window above Jide’s Gifti Dandy. The photograph is vaguely sinister; he looks way too excited about his job. To answer my burning questions about this sign, I called Dr. Nitkin’s office. “Doctor is busy,” I was told, but the receptionist was kind enough to chat. Here, our exclusive interview.
Does Dr. Nitkin always wear a tuxedo while doing breast checks?
No. A bow tie sometimes.
Do you know why he wore a tuxedo for the photo?
No. I have to ask him.
Do you know who took that photo?
No. I’m not too sure who did it.
Do you get a lot of patients who see that sign and call?
No, I don’t think so.
Where is Dr. Nitkin from originally?
From Kiev, Ukraine.
What are his specialties?
OB/GYN.
How long has he been practicing?
Since 1987.
What are his favorite places to eat in Downtown Brooklyn?
I don’t know.
How many clients does he have?
Weekly, over 100.
What do you think of that sign?
I think he’s funny. He’s a funny guy.
According to Google, Dr. Nitkin’s fashion choices are unique in his field. Searching “OB/GYN wearing tuxedo” brought up no relevant results, but Nitkin’s face comes up as the first result for search term “OB/GYN in bow tie.”
Hats off, Dr. N!
