Woman Dies Walking Between Train Cars
File this under “New York nightmares come true”: A woman was attempting to walk between cars on the 1 train on Monday when she lost her balance, fell between the cars, and was crushed by the moving train. She was struck again by a train directly behind the train she fell from. Horrible.
The incident took place in Inwood at around 10:30 am yesterday, prompting a suspension of northbound trains between 137th and 168th streets. It was a particularly bad scene because that stretch of the 1 is on elevated tracks, treacherous for moving between the cars. The woman was 54 years old. Right now, walking between cars on a moving subway carries a fine of $75. The kibosh against moving between cars was put in place in 2005, even though the doors are left unlocked.
