Bushwick Coffee Shop Posts Anti-Semitic Rant, Calls Jewish Neighbors ‘Greedy Infiltrators’
Here’s a quick lesson on how not to run a social media account: In between a number of photos celebrating roasted beans and quirky latte art, the person running the Instagram account for the Bushwick Coffee Shop, a cafe at 203 Wilson Avenue, posted a long, anti-semitic screed calling his Jewish neighbors “greedy infiltrators” and blaming the Jewish community for the rapid development going on in the neighborhood. Should’ve stuck to selfies, dude.
“Ok, what I REALLY want to talk about is how to consider the Jews (oh yes, let’s talk about it) who want a piece or all of Bushwick,” the rant begins. It seems to be a protest against a couple of Jewish men who the Instragrammer thinks is interested in buying his building. It only gets worse in the comments, where there are such gems as “oh, dear I’m telling the truth.. I guess I’m a racist” and the hashtag nonsense poem “#NoRoom for #Greed in #Bushwick #Greedy #Infiltrate #Infiltration #Domination #Money #Brooklyn #Williamsburg #WakeUp #WakeUpAndSmellTheCoffee #Awaken #RejectIt.”
It’s unclear how closely the Instagram account, first reported on by Brokelyn, is actually affiliated with the business. The profile touts itself as the unofficial account of the coffee shop. But the man in most of the selfies looks an awful lot like Michael Avila, the owner of the shop, whom The Bushwick Daily interviewed after he opened the cafe this summer.
