How to Crowd-Fund Your Way To Self-Publishing A Book About Brooklyn

By Rebecca Jennings

BK20_WBURG

FOR NEIL DEMAUSE, the choice to go the DIY route for his forthcoming book, The Brooklyn Wars, wasn’t anything personal against traditional publishing. But the journalist, who has spent the last decade writing about Brooklyn in magazines, books, newspapers, and his own zines, felt that the hybrid of ten-year-old material and updated research on the constantly shifting battlefronts of Coney Island, Downtown Brooklyn, Bushwick and Bed-Stuy, would be better suited for a path meant for these types of messy endeavors. “I wanted to be able to get the book to press fast, and publishers invariably take a year or more,” he says. The road less traveled has never been smoother.
