Last week the Brooklyn Academy of Music announced the lineup for the 24-hour movie marathon that begins on Friday, September 5th, at BAM’s Harvey Theatre. The education-themed marathon assigns school-subject categories to classic films in a sort of fever dream of cinematic education that would’ve made high school a lot more fun; for example, Clueless is the evening’s “English” course. The rest of the lineup is below.
FRI, SEP 5
8:45pm Jurassic Park (Science)
11:00pm The Big Lebowski (Drivers Ed)
SAT, SEP 6
1:00am Videodrome (Media)
2:50am Step Up 3D (Dance)
4:45am The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Music)
6:20am Viola (Theater)
8:45am Raiders of the Lost Ark (History)
10:45am Do the Right Thing (Ethics)
1:15pm An American in Paris (Art)
3:00pm Clueless (English)
6:15pm Dazed and Confused (School’s out!)
The event is a fundraiser, proceeds of which will “directly benefit students K—12 through BAM Education’s in- and after-school programs in dance, theater, poetry, film criticism, and more.” Previously, there was a $250 fundraising requirement in addition to the $20 box office ticket, but BAM since dispensed with the former stipulation.
However, if you do raise at least $500 (and 15 individuals so far have), then you get a “free” massage at some point during the marathon. Other activities include happy hour(s), yoga, and rock wall climbing. Meals, snacks, and ice cream sandwiches will be provided by Melt Bakery, Sigmund’s Pretzels, Fornino’s, and Ted and Honey, amongst others. You can sign up here.
