5 Questions With: Katie Garcia
5 Questions With is a series spotlighting some of Brooklyn’s most exciting and influential creatives. (You can explore our archive of picks here.)
Katie Garcia is not afraid to be silly (see above), but when it comes to music — she is all business. Having served a long stint as the general manager for recently-behemoth independent record label Captured Tracks, she now does A&R for Secretly Label Group and is in the process of starting her own record label alongside her husband, Dustin Payseur (sometimes better known as the frontman/founder of Beach Fossils.) If that’s not enough to convince you that she knows what she’s talking about, her Best Of picks from around Brooklyn certainly will be. After the jump.
Name: Katie Garcia
Neighborhood: Greenpoint
Record you’ve listened to most in your life:
Neil Young, After the Gold Rush because it’s my go-to “I don’t know what to put on right now” record. Every song is a classic. I never get sick of it.
Up-and-coming Brooklyn-based band to look out for:
LACED. It’s down tempo punk that is noisy and melodic. No recordings released yet so you should just catch them live. They rule both as people and musicians.
Fave place to see a show:
Baby’s All Right. The sound is really solid there, they have great drinks and food, and it always has a good vibe. It has the niceness of legit venue with the energy of a DIY one.
Fave bar:
Ramona. Best cocktails. Get the “Two French Sisters” if you’re feeling classy or the absinth is you want to have a dark yet fun night.
Go-to drink: Vodka Ginger. Simple and sweet!
