Bartender Chronicles: Meet Eli Luntz of Union Pool
Have you ever wondered what life is like for those kind and patient people pouring shots behind the bar? This summer we’re bringing you a meet and greet with some of your favorite faces behind the bar at your favorite haunts. After the jump, Eli Luntz from Union Pool keeps it real about the official cocktail of Brooklyn. Check it out…
How long have you been a bartender?
13 years, 8 in NYC.
Where did you get your start?
At a particularly magical theme park in Central Florida. I wore short shorts, hiking boots, a fanny pack and LOTS of flair My official title was “Safari Guide.” Every once in a while, a team from the park wold come by on Seg-ways to insect our facial hair for discrepancies. It was bonkers.
What would be your choice for the official cocktail of Brooklyn?
I could blather on and on about a stunning cocktail with complex herbal notes, effervescence, and a lovely mouth-feel, bt it’s gotta be a can of beer and a shot, right? I always forget that the “combo” doesn’t really exist in Manhattan.
What are your favorite local drinks that you serve?
Greenhook Ginsmiths are making some killer products, and Steven DeAngelo who runs the show is a totally rad dude. His American dry gin makes a killer Negroni. WE’re also fully stocked on cans of Brooklyn Beer, and ready to play Hungry Hungry Hipster all summer long!
What do you do when you’re not tending bar?
Heading back to school for an MFA this fall, still working on my Triple Lindy.
You just got off work and you’re famished, where do you go?
If it’s an early shift I’ll head to Rye, Jimmy’s Diner, Suzume, Delilah’s, Dokebi, La Superior…or just straigt to my second home, Hotel Delmano. If it’s the late shift, I’ll see you at Hana Food. Alberto is a sandwich GOD, a true gift to the Southside. Hey pal!
