Zola Jesus — “Dangerous Days”
Nika Danilova, also known as Zola Jesus, could be reading the menu and make it sound like the monumental recitation of a bible verse before the apocalypse reigns. I’m not sure I’m even exaggerating when I say that. Her voice is huge, and it benefits from having a lot of breathing space in her songs — something that the increasingly crisp production of her albums has provided her. “Dangerous Days” is a new kind of achievement: scissoring synth-lines, an unrepentant drum beat, and her soaring vocals. You’re right, Nika, these are dangerous days. Her new LP drops October 7th via Mute, but until then we’ll be listening to this on repeat.
