Mermaid Parade Crowns Its King and Queen, Dante and Chiara de Blasio
Ladies and gentlemen, mermaids and mermen, bow to your new, sparkly leaders: Dante and Chiara de Blasio have just been named King Neptune and Queen Mermaid for this year’s Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
The much beloved, recently rescued summer solstice tradition will herald its 32nd annual year with Mayor Bill de Blasio’s two children at its helm. The brother and sister duo will march alongside the usual dose of costumed revelers, big bands, massive floats, antique cars, drill teams, as well as lots and lots of sequined nipple pasties at the parade, which will take place at 1pm on June 21.
The de Blasio spawn follow in the footsteps of previous Kings and Queens Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Queen Latifah, Judah Friedlander, Carole Radziwill, Harvey Keitel and Daphne Keitel. May their reign be long and prosperous.
