reBar Couples: Bushwick’s 1 Knickerbocker Giving Away A Free Wedding

Last week, we shared the good(?) news that Jason Stevens, former owner of DUMBO’s reBar, had been arrested and arraigned by the Brooklyn D.A.’s office on the charges of  grand larceny in the second degree and tax evasion in the second degree. Both counts carry a maximum of 15 years in jail.

At the same time, that news was bittersweet because many of the couples that gave Stevens thousands of dollars in wedding deposits may not see a dime of their money again. In light of that, parts of the Brooklyn community have rallied around the reBar couples, offering their venues at discounts or helping couples figure out where to go from here. Now, a new Bushwick-based “first responder” has stepped up: Bushwick’s 1 Knickerbocker is offering one lucky couple an absolutely free wedding.

The news comes via Grub Street: According to the food blog, 1 Knickerbocker owner, Jesse Levitt, is holding a contest of sorts to give a reBar couple as close to a dream wedding as possible. To enter, couples must send an email to that includes their wedding date, contact information and “the story that makes your wedding situation unique.” Mr. Levitt, here come the waterworks.

The deadline to enter is May 31 and on June 2, Levitt will notify the winning couple. The pair will get this amazing wedding package:

  • Exclusive use of the space for up to 100 people, for the ceremony and reception
  • Limited open bar with beer, wine, and a signature cocktail
  • Buffet dinner; tableware and furniture
  • PA system, stage, and dance floor
  • Four bathrooms, including one with handicapped access
  • And more…

On a final note, the reBar couples who don’t win are still invited to sign up for discounted weddings at 1 Knickerbocker if they still haven’t figured things out. Or if the Bushwick restaurant isn’t quite for you, Eater NY has a roundup of other venues helping reBar couples. Best of luck to you all!
