George R.R. Martin Releases Excerpt From The Winds of Winter, But Good Luck Reading It

Like HBO Go before him, George R.R. Martin has released something HUGE and failed to account for just how popular it would be.
Today, the suspender-wearing author shared a chapter-long excerpt from the highly-anticipated and long-awaited sixth book in the A Song of Fire and Ice series, The Winds of Winter, and his website has more or less crashed. You can attempt to read the excerpt here, but at press time all we were getting was Google Chrome’s swirly loading symbol of death.
We’re guessing that the release is meant to be a reassurance to fans that he is indeed “working on it” (as he said at the Game of Thrones fan event in Brooklyn one week ago), but he also says that he actually wrote the chapter, entitled Mercy, years ago. Ugh.
At this point, the average time between books in the series has been 3.75 years and April 12, 2015 (or somewhere around there, math is not our strong suit) will mark 3.75 years since A Dance With Dragons was released. So, the clock is ticking, George.
Anyway,–and we feel like we shouldn’t have to say this, but we will–there are spoilers. So, if you’ve never picked up the books, don’t read the excerpt. And if you have read the books, enjoy this little taste of what’s to come.
