The Elm, Aska Nominated For James Beard Awards
Yes, Manhattan is still the culinary capital of New York City and most likely will be for time immemorial, but every year Brooklyn comes out swinging and slowly but surely the borough is making a name for itself in the food world.
Today, The James Beard Foundation officially released the list of semifinalists for this year’s much-coveted James Beard Awards (named after the late chef and food writer) and Brooklyn had a pretty strong showing. French eatery The Elm was nominated in the Best New Restaurant category and Fredrik Berselius of Aska, César Ramirez of the Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare and Carlo Mirarchi of Roberta’s are all up for an award in the Best Chef: NYC category. Ramirez and Mirarchi were up for the award in 2013 as well.
Daniel Delaney of Delaney BBQ and Eli Sussman of Mile End are up for a Rising Star Chef of the Year award and Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver and spirits educator David Wondrich are up for the Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional award. And Maison Premiere is among the semifinalists for Outstanding Bar Program while Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito of Baked are up for the Outstanding Pastry Chef award.
Finalists will be announced on March 18 and the awards will take place in NYC on May 5. Here’s hoping Brooklyn brings home the gold!
