Naturally, Someone Out There Is Upset About “Satanic” Pussy Riot Coming to Brooklyn
A lot of the time, when people say inflammatory nonsense just to drum up attention and controversy, it’s a tough call: remind the world that people like this really are out there, or just take away their power by ignoring ’em? In this case, seems worth remembering that even with oh, say, 99 percent of Brooklyn being nothing but excited about Pussy Riot’s forthcoming Barclays Center show, their work has still earned them some enemies, even here.
According to a report from the Brooklyn Paper, Archpriest Serge Lukianov of Bensonhurst’s Orthodox New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia Church had this to say on the matter: “This is satanic. It is appalling that people are making them into heroes. Anyone who desecrates a church, synagogue, or mosque is not a hero.”
Lukianov added, “They have their own opinion, but to desecrate the holiest of holy churches if completely out of line.” The paper also tracked down Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, New York state’s only Russian-born legislator, who of course countered, “Freedom of speech is freedom of speech.”
And that’ll likely be the end of it, give or take a few errant protestors. But, there you have it: the one person in Brooklyn who’s on-record as denouncing Pussy Riot for all things “satanic.” Someone out there was bound to find him.
