10 Brooklyn Neighborhood Restaurants and Bars Where You Ought to Become a Regular
Fort Defiance
Red Hook doesn’t exactly have a ton of places to choose from if you want to become a regular, but this restaurant is a great place to start. It’s open during the week for lunch, and that’s as good of a time as any to plop yourself down at either the bar or a tabletop that’s covered in a bright, cheerful pattern. If you’re there during the week, you’ll mostly be surrounded by other neighborhood denizens and can get to know them and then owners, all while enjoying some truly amazing wine, and—if you’re smart—a solid and satisfying grilled cheese and soup combo. Red Hook might not have the variety of places as does neighboring Carroll Gardens, but with a place like Fort Defiance, who cares? This isn’t about trying a bunch of spots, it’s about getting acclimated to the best of what’s out there.
