Best Place to Really, Really Sweat: Shea Stadium
Where it is: 20 Meadow St, East Williamsburg
Who to see: Roomruner and Greys (tonight), Big Ups with Shark? (8/3), Unstoppable Death Machines (8/10), Joan of Arc (8/25)
A show-and-recording space on a sleepy industrial block, Shea has established itself as one of the key players in Brooklyn’s constantly fluctuating DIY scene. Do you feel as though you might be in your parents’ basement in the 1990s when going to see a show? Check. Do local bands use it as a practice space and lend a hand with operations? Check. (Punk powerhouses The So So Glos and Titus Andronicus, in this case.) Is there a lack of nearby apartments, lessening the threat of noise complaints? Check. Do promoters tend to put a premium on punk bands in their curatorial choices? Check. Does this make for some really sweaty shows in such an intimate space? Sure does.
Worthy alternatives: 285 Kent, Death by Audio, The Market Hotel (reopening soon!)
