Bands With Pans: Ava Luna
- Can of squid in own ink
“It’s the final indignity [for the squid],” Ethan added. “Laying in all its juice, bleeding to death… I guess Carlos’ family is a little bit Cuban and it’s maybe a Cuban thing.” The ink, he said, lent a “salty, earthy flavor.”
Later Carlos, indeed a little bit (one quarter) Cuban, semi-confirmed, “I’ve been told it’s a Cuban dish—I don’t know if that’s true or not.”
Once all parties arrived, we ducked into Key Foods. A slightly tipsy Carlos led the crew, immediately cradling a massive watermelon. “First things first,” he declared, describing it as a crucial dessert.
The band filled their shopping basket quickly and plowed toward check-out. Sadly, Carlos had to part with his watermelon when Ethan stopped him. “That’s a third of our budget. We’re not getting that.”
