PHOTOS: Red Hook’s Off-Limits Waterfront Ruins
The Gowanus Bay Terminal, an industrial facility along the south end of Columbia Street in Red Hook, is not usually open to the public. But this weekend, one of its old workshops, out of commission for the last several decades, hosted Falconworks‘ production of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. (About a doctor who’s ostracized after he discovers his town’s water is polluted, it felt relevant to Red Hook for its ongoing battle with the EPA about storing toxic canalwaste there; half the windows in the neighborhood have “SAY NO TO A TOXIC RED HOOK” posters.) While still an active site—home to that enormous Grain Terminal building—it’s also full of structures that have been left to ruin. We took lots of pictures!
