The Walkmen to Play a Free, Ticketed Show at McCarren Park as Part of the 2013 Northside Festival
Back when we announced the first batch of bands playing at Northside Music (June 13-16)—a batch that included the likes of Lambchop, Black Flag, Iceage, Son Volt, Twin Sister and many more—we told you that, just like in years past, we’d also be hosting some shows at McCarren Park. And it’s true. We are! Two shows, actually. Here’s the first of them.
On Saturday, June 15th, The Walkmen will play a free show at McCarren Park and everyone with a badge is guaranteed entry. It will be The Walkmen’s only New York City performance of 2013, and really, we couldn’t be happier about it. From their earliest days as part of a wave of early aughts bands that helped put New York City back on the musical map, straight through to last year, when they released their outstanding sixth full-length record, Heaven, The Walkmen have been among our most reliable purveyors of elegant, anthemic indie rock.
And yes, you read that first part right. The Walkmen at McCarren Park is a ticketed, totally free show. That’s right; no badge required, and leave your nickels at home. All you have to do is RSVP. Already have a badge? Perfect! You don’t have to RSVP, and admission is guaranteed. Gates open at 3pm, and the first band will hit the stage by 4pm. But if you don’t have a badge, get there early! Admission with an RSVP isn’t guaranteed. You’ll find us at McCarren Park (Bedford Ave. and N. 12th St, right next to the tennis courts). And be sure to stay tuned for more Northside Festival updates; we’re hosting yet another show at McCarren Park on Sunday, June 16, but, you know. We can’t give away all of our secrets just yet.
And yes, while we’re thrilled to offer up a show of that size for literally no money at all, since our last announcement we’ve been hard at work cramming as many club shows into four days as we possibly can: hard-hitting post-punk/rock outfit The Men are playing, as are the ever-sludgy Kylesa, fuzzed-out (one-man) garage-rock band White Fence, O.G. New York ska legends The Toasters, and Montreal-based songwriter Mac Demarco just to name a few. Plus, we’ve got Nü Sensae, Subhumans, Torche, Mac DeMarco and Sonny & the Sunsets. You’ll find the full Northside Music lineup to date after the jump.
There are only a few Northside Early Bird Music badges left for $65! Click here to get one of your own before they’re gone for good. Follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook for updates, because it’s only going to get bigger from here on out, we promise.
