The 5 Littlest Cemeteries in Brooklyn
The Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church Graveyard
Attached to a Kings Highway church, this graveyard has graves dating back at least to 1660. (Many of the headstones have weathered away to illegibility.) Some of the adjoining land was rumored to have been used as an Indian burial ground. Members of noted Dutch families like the Wyckoffs and Kouwenhovens are buried here. The first church was built in the 17th century, and as one site notes, “it was over 100 years old… by the time of the American Revolution and the Battle of Brooklyn.” The modern building was built in 1854. “This building has a history of being hit by lightning as well as surviving fires,” NYCago writes. “The last lighting strike in 1952 caused minimal damage, but the fire in 1974 destroyed most of the church’s interior.” [photo]
