Compared to other cities, New York sucks at recycling. While San Francisco and Portland keep almost 80 percent of their waste from ending up in landfills, and Chicago and Oakland achieve a respectable 40 percent, NYC diverted only 16.6 percent in 2012, the Wall Street Journal reports. In one more of the mayor’s lame duck initiatives, he’s proposing an expansion of the city’s recycling program, including a new center in Sunset Park and 1,000 new recycling receptacles.
