Superstorm Sandy: Were Mailboxes Flooded?
I was on Main Street in DUMBO the other day, which experienced some flooding during Superstorm Sandy (shown above), and I wondered about the mailboxes there: did they get flooded? Was any mail dampened or lost? What is the USPS’s protocol for superstorms?
“Several days prior to any anticipated storm or the most recent hurricane, emergency teams implement full contingency plans to be ready for operation before, during and after,” local spokesperson Connie Chirichello explained. “Extra trucks are deployed to deliver mail, collect mail from blue collection boxes on the street, and dispatch outgoing mail. Postal facilities are protecting mail by keeping it safe and elevated.”
I think that’s the trick blue mailboxes use, too: now you know why mailboxes have legs?
