More Children Shot In Brooklyn. Terrible Things Happened This Weekend.
This is a story that is getting way too familiar.
Yet another incident of random gun violence struck the city this weekend and two of the victims were a two-year-old girl and a thirteen-year-old boy. The Wall Street Journal reports that six victims—including the teenager and toddler—were taken to local Brooklyn hospitals after being caught in a drive-by shooting in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn on Sunday evening. Luckily, none of the injuries appear to be life threatening.
If it seems like you’ve read this story before, you’re not far off. The Daily News reminds us that “Sunday’s shooting marked the third incident in as many weeks where a child under the age of 5 was shot in New York City.”
Earlier on Sunday, two different families in the Bronx mourned the losses of their young sons to gun violence. Lloyd Morgan Jr. was 4-years-old and Kemar Brooks was just 14 when they lost their lives. The New York Times reports that the common thread among the visitors who came to pay their condolences to both families was the inability to find words to express their sorrow. Because there are no words for losses like this. There is no way to make sense of the senseless. These sorts of incidents are why people need moments of silence. Standing speechless, shaking a fist at the world in which kids can’t even play in a park without running the risk of being killed by a stray bullet, this is sometimes the only way to respond initially.
But then, then you go and work to change gun legislation and get the goddamned guns off the streets.
