The Weekender: What to Wear to the Mermaid Parade

We’re not sure what surprises are in store to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Mermaid Parade, but if the past 29 years are any indication, you can expect to see lots of caked-on glitter, towering wigs, and precariously placed seashell tops.
Of course, you don’t have to find some flippers to make a splash at the annual Coney Island spectacle; here are your best bets for dressing the part if you’re south Brooklyn-bound on Saturday.

In God We Trust’s Rugby Onesie puts a retro swimsuit spin on the classic romper. If anyone questions your mermaid commitment, just point them to the back—the row of mint green bows is so Ariel. In fact, don’t be surprised if you’re pulled up onto one of the floats wearing this number.

You might think that you can’t pull off a tank, but you’re wrong. We promise. For proof, check out Acne’s Montauk Stripe Tank. The lightweight cotton top is cut a bit loose so you can really feel the breeze as you bake in the sun on Surf Avenue—and the stripes give it a vaguely nautical vibe without getting too Popeye.
