Jameson takes us behind the scenes to present 12 of Brooklyn’s finest bartenders – the heroes who make it all happen. Learn about the hidden talents and signature drinks, tips beyond tipping, and even hear some of their best bar stories. This week’s bartender: Laurent Sterk.
What would surprise people about being a bartender?
The amount of work that actually goes into it. It’s a continuous challenge of prioritizing what responsibilities to focus on next.
What’s your signature Jameson cocktail?
Our Bushwick Mule. Jameson, ginger beer, and Angostura bitters. Really good. It’s also great with Jameson Black Barrel.
What’s your most versatile cocktail ingredient?
Surprisingly, ginger beer. It’s got a little spice and a unique sweetness. A splash can liven up all types of cocktails.
What’s your second passion outside of bartending?
I write. I’ve self published a few collections of poetry and short stories. Currently I’m working on a novel.
Why did you decide to become a bartender?
The service industry has always been a great compliment to my writing. It allows me to have a flexible schedule and provides its own large body of inspiration and experiences to draw from. But the job is also great on its own. I love the energy. The social nature of it. I’ll take laughter and conversation over a desk job any day.
