Gallery Rounds: Up & Underway

chelsea11

The new exhibition season in NYC is not yet a week old, but it’s fair to say that it’s already, in a quantitative sense, well underway.

That is, there were just enough gallery openings last week to note without exaggeration that there are now hundreds of new exhibits for you to see all around town.

Sounds daunting, right? And wonderful as well? A welcome thrust of activity?

True, true and true. Also, it’s just the start. Plenty of galleries will be launching their fall seasons this week, too, so stay tuned.

I only made it 50 or so of the new shows between Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon, but I’d say that’s a numerically sound enough sampling to insert here at least one mildly critical set of observations:

There are lots of fresh painting shows out there, folks. And lots of those paintings are fairly large. And many of them are really good. And some of them are truly great.

And I’ll leave that there for now.

Below is a selection of photos I took while running around in the Lower East Side, Chelsea and Brooklyn. Have a look, take a few notes, then try to see some of these shows—and so many others—for yourself.
