A Few Excellent Art Things to See This Weekend
A weekly compendium of mostly Brooklyn-based art things.
SIGNAL GALLERY: ‘IRIS’ — AIDAN KOCH & ‘DRILL’ — MADELINE HOLLANDER
In Madeline Hollander’s ‘Drill’, dancers move through evacuation procedures outlined by universities, airplanes, movie theaters, and other vulnerable public spaces: inflatable airplane evacuation slides hang from the ceiling and provide an ominous structure for dancers. Paintings by Aidan Koch echo the maze—her lady-Gorey drawings give painful spatial awareness to damaged, elusive psyches.
Performances: every Saturday & Sunday 1:00PM — 6:00PM through October 2; Exhibition: through October 2
SORRY ARCHIVE & THE PERFECT NOTHING CATALOG: INFINITY POOL
The Infinity Pool at Fort Tilden, organized by Frank Traynor of the Perfect Nothing Catalog, is third in a series of experiential installations—the “primordial day spa trilogy” included a sauna at Signal Gallery and a mud and seltzer house in the Rockaways. This installation is, indeed, a functioning infinity pool with actual open swim hours, but the experience requires inward reflection rather than the classic outward-facing “I’m-in-an-expensive-place” #infinitypool capture: mirrored walls reflect swimmers as they pass through reeds and cattails. Organized with Sorry Archive; use this loose map to get there.
Open Swim: every Saturday & Sunday 12:00PM — 4:00PM through September 25
MOUNTAIN GALLERY: RARE FORM
Four artists join abstract forces in this sculpture-based show at Mountain, in Bushwick. Ashley Carter and Hannah Levey represent a sort of medical-industrial complex, with rebar, steel, pigmented rubber, and cast silicone; Jessica Sanders and Jane Fox Hipple, on the other hand, wax (that’s a pun on Sanders) crafty, with Hipple showing rustic found assemblages and Sanders offering deceptively simple beeswax structures. RSVP here.
Opening: Friday, September 2 7:00PM — 10:00PM
INTERFERENCE ARCHIVE: MOBILE PRINT POWER — SOÑAMOS SENTIRNOS LIBRES
Beginning in May, Mobile Print Power, a multigenerational collective based in Corona, Queens, temporarily moved their collaborative silkscreen printing headquarters to Interference Archive, in Gowanus. They spent the summer working with seven organizations, including Talk is Cheap/Hablar No Cuesta Nada collective and New York State Youth Leadership Council, the first undocumented youth led organization in New York. The closing block party, with music, will feature silkscreening workshops and a chance to see the results of Mobile Print Power’s summer collaborations.
Closing Block Party: September 5 3:00PM — 7:00PM
