Stream Erykah Badu’s New Mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone

Erykah Badu But You Caint Use My Phone

UPDATE: Erykah Badu’s new tape is now streaming, and though it sounds like Drake appears on “U Use To Call Me” and later on “What’s Yo Phone Number/Telephone,” Dallas-based blog Central Track reports that it is actually ItsRoutine, an Atlanta rapper who is also known as Aubrey Davis. Which raises the question of which Aubrey she’s referencing when she wrote “this one’s for Aubrey.” Andre 3000 also guests on the tape’s final track “Hello.” Stream the whole tape below and buy it here.

During the peak “Hotline Bling” blitz just following release of the song’s meme-worthy video, Erykah Badu dropped her own take on the track. (I’m still obsessed with the Trina edition, personally) Turns out, that was just a precursor to an entire mixtape of phone-themed songs. But You Caint Use My Phone will be out exclusively via iTunes/Apple Music this Friday, 11/27, with wider release scheduled for the following Friday, 12/4. I guess Rihanna isn’t the only one staking her claim on Black Friday.

The mixtape has eleven tracks, each with a phone reference in the title, and the last is called “Hello.” Is Erykah tacking an Adele cover on the end there? The album itself is a reference to Badu’s own classic “Tyrone,” and for the tape her “Hotline Bling” re-imagination has been dubbed “Cell U Lar Device.” She worked closely with producer Zach Witness on the tape, along with her own son 7 Benjamin. Hear that cover below and check out the full tracklist.
