Does the aroma of an old book make you swoon? Would you sooner perish than purchase a Kindle? Are you happy to prowl for hours for the perfect vintage photograph or mid-century necklace?
If you answered yes, you’ll definitely want to bookmark the Brooklyn Books, Art, Photos and Design Expo (BAPD) on your calendar. On September 19 and 20, over 145 dealers from all around the country and beyond will be at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint, exhibiting for sale antique books, art, ephemera, maps, prints, fine art and mid-century design.
In addition to booths full of vintage books, photographs, art, and jewelry, there will be a number of exciting exhibits. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland, the Lewis Carroll Society of North America will be on hand with rare editions of the classic book, and present interpretive readings of “The Mad Tea Party” at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day.
Richard Minsky, the author of the exquisite The Art of American Book Covers 1875-1930, will present an exhibit of many of the book covers featured in his book and will give a talk both days at 2 p.m. And a contemporary photography exhibit of 20 photographers by 21st Editions, “The Art of the Book”, is an amazing collection of limited edition books combining papermaking, letterpress design (typography), bookmaking, bookbinding, diverse photography, and poetry and prose. Local artists Michael Murray and Sheila Metzner will be on hand to discuss from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The show runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults, and free for children under 12 who are accompanied by an adult. You can also score half-price coupons online.
