The Brooklyn Song: The Most Heartfelt Ballad About Kings County Ever Made
There are plenty of songs about Brooklyn: the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Til Brooklyn,” Jay-Z’s “Brooklyn (We Go Hard),” Neal Diamond’s “Brooklyn Roads,” Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Brooklyn Zoo.” But none are so deeply heartfelt and earnest in their belted praises for Kings County as “The Brooklyn Song,” by Coney Island native Richie Levoi.
This piano ballad by the mostly undiscovered artist recently resurfaced on Reddit, accompanied by a slideshow about a jabroni’s life in “Good Ol’ Brooklyn:” shots of pizza, Keystone Park, the Cyclone, the N train. It’s the perfect song to blast while stuck in traffic on the BQE. It includes such lyrical gems as “Saturday night at Bay Ridge, picked up a girl and made out under the Verrazano Bridge” (so romantic) and “Nothin’ beats Sundays in Bensonhurst.” Literally, nothing.
