Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a good day for reflecting on how far we’ve come in this country, and how much farther we have to go. At the very least, it’s a day to revel in the last three-day weekend afforded you by the federal government until President’s Day. What it is not? A time to vandalize the memorial of a man who was choked to death by the police less than a year ago. And yet, that is what some jerks supposedly did to the Eric Garner memorial in Staten Island, according to Eric Garner’s daughter, Erica Garner.
The spot where Garner was fatally choked, near 202 Bay Street on Staten Island, has held a memorial for Garner since his death on July 17. Police say the fire caught fire at around 10 pm yesterday. They also say that the memorial caught fire accidentally, and no criminality is involved. Erica Garner believes otherwise, as does her stepfather, Benjamin Carr. Both vowed to rebuild the memorial, where vigils and protests routinely gathered since this summer’s events.

Garner also tweeted a phone message from the owner of the property asking to move the memorial because the candles left had become a fire hazard
