The Top 40 Songs of 2014
Spoon – “Inside Out”
Dum Dum Girls – “Cult of Love”
Spoon, on an elevated level of success and longevity above those just mentioned, have been balancing on the “steady change without fucking up” tightrope for a couple decades. They Want My Soul has lively versions of many usual moves: pop songs with dignity, rock songs with swing. “Inside Out” however, is singular. It sounds like Heaven: The Video Game as scored by godless studio session players. Dee Dee Penny’s Dum Dum Girls have the gait of old pros at this point, too. It now only takes her two minutes to reconcile Siouxsie Sioux with Sarah Martin from Belle and Sebastian.
