The Rooks are Brooklyn-based band just funky enough “to make your mother nervous.” Drawing on influences as wide ranging as Stevie Wonder and the Dirty Projectors, these guys have been selected as Deli’s Artist of the Month, performed the second highest grossing residency at Piano’s ever, are currently in studio preparing their second EP, and are about to kick off a tour starting next week. In general: the future is looking — and sounding — good. Check out their Brooklyn picks, after the jump.
Name: The Rooks
Neighborhood: We rehearse in Gowanus and have two rooks living in Williamsburg. The rest of us are spread out in Manhattan and Queens.
The record you’ve probably listened to most in your life: Voodoo by D’Angelo because…D’Angelo.
Brooklyn-based band to watch: Wet Leather! All incredibly talented artists and friends from way back in our Wesleyan days. We also love Taylor McFerrin.
Favorite place to go see a show? Brooklyn Bowl. We have amazing memories on and off that stage. Some of the best fried chicken in Brooklyn.
Favorite Brooklyn bar?Harefield Road.
Go-to drink? Stop it, alcohol is poison. But we don’t mind a gin and tonic from time to time.
