Bushwick DJ Hit And Killed While Cycling
Late last month, we shared a report from Atlantic Cities revealing the city’s most dangerous streets for cyclists and unsurprisingly, Brooklyn’s Broadway, the thoroughfare that runs from the East River to East New York, was high up on that list. Yesterday, that was illustrated once again, when Zack Xochil Fortune, a local DJ, was cycling along the roadway and was hit and killed by a car.
Fortune, who performed under the name Furoche, was riding through the Myrtle Avenue and Broadway intersection when he was hit by a motorist and pinned against a second car around 2:30 pm yesterday afternoon. The FDNY rushed Fortune to Woodhull Medical Center off Flushing Avenue before reportedly transferring him to Bellevue where he was declared dead.
While it’s not clear whether the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the death, we can confirm that Fortune’s death will be the 107th traffic death citywide and the 36th in Brooklyn according to WNYC’s ongoing Mean Streets project.
There’s no word yet on when Fortune’s funeral will be held, but those interested in helping with the funeral expenses can donate via Give Forward here.
