The amount of infections here is noticeably higher. There were 246 new cases in Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights, 180 in Flatbush and East Flatbush. In Bed-Stuy/Crown Heights, more than 80 percent of the infected were black, and almost twice as many were men who had sex with men than were straight. In the Flatbushes, even a higher percentage of new diagnoses involved blacks—90 percent—while the spread between gay and straight was about the same. East New York reported 88 new cases, a quarter of them among Hispanics.
