The son of Jewish immigrants, Keitel was raised in Brighton Beach, and attended Lincoln High School in Coney Island, whose alumni include many notable artists. He would eventually cross the bridge and find fame and acclaim, first as an early Scorsese collaborator, then with other directors, New Yorkers (Abel Ferrara, Paul Auster, James Toback) and not (Quentin Tarantino, etc.) Through each role, he established himself as an iconic New York tough, one of the most recognizable and respected actors of his generation.
