Bushwick City Farm
Don’t let the name fool you—this Bushwick-based organization isn’t just a small urban farm. It started three years ago as a community garden, in a trash-strewn lot on Broadway, but now its volunteers do more than produce food and coordinate donated foodstuffs for its neighbors in need. They also distribute clothing and host educational programs, including ESL classes. “These programs serve to provide tangible benefits locally,” co-founder Masha Radzinsky told us. “Our main focus is to create community unity and self-sufficiency [with] community-based networks of mutual aid, aimed at social justice.” Now that’s how you act locally when you’re thinking globally.
