Brooklyn Is Getting Its First Luxury Building for Couples With 2 Incomes and No Kids
Leasing for the one- and two-bedroom units opens this week.
A new apartment building in a family-friendly neighborhood in Brooklyn that’s geared toward DINKs—that is, couples who are dual-income, no kids—will accept lease applications this week, according to the New York Post.
The building, located at 655 Union St. in Park Slope, is designed to lure childless 20- and 30-somethings to the area with fancy amenities including a pilates studio, rooftop pool, and dog spa.
“The demographics are becoming clearer: If you look at the average age of when people are starting to have children, particularly in places like New York, that age has been pushed back over time,” Brian Ezra, founding partner at Avery Hall, the developer behind the project, told the Post. “We’ve tried to design the amenities and the services for this more mature renter. They are going to appreciate the things we’re offering, in particular a big focus on health and wellness, which we believe speaks more to a mature kind of resident—not necessarily partying all night.”
The building is supposed to open sometime in January and will feature only one- and two-bedroom units. One of these units will run renters around $5,000 to $8,000-plus a month.
And while all kinds of people—even those with kids—can technically apply for units in what the Post calls the first building of its kind in Brooklyn, it should be noted that not many of the amenities, including happy hours at the rooftop pool, DJ performances, and a Peloton bike gym, seem child-friendly. And there is no playroom.
Park Slope resident Margo McCoy told the Post that she likes “seeing kids around” because it makes the place feel more like home.
“I have kids in my building and I love it,” she said.
Some residents called the venture “lame,” and others even questioned its premise.
Sarah Kylany, a bartender, asked, “What if you get pregnant? Are they going to make you move out?”
