Discover the Creative Heart of Brooklyn at Gowanus Open Studios 2023
Gowanus—nestled in western Brooklyn—is no longer the borough’s best-kept secret. This dynamic neighborhood, known for its arts and nightlife communities bursts to life during the 27th Gowanus Open Studios (GOS 2023) presented by Arts Gowanus, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the community through the power of art.
Mark your calendars for the weekend of October 21st and 22nd when more than 350 artists and 70 venues across Gowanus will open their doors wide, inviting you to explore the hidden treasures of this vibrant artistic hub. GOS 2023 is Brooklyn’s most significant celebration of local art and artists, offering you a unique chance to step inside the very spaces where creativity thrives.
Artists at Gowanus Open Studios aren’t just showcasing their work; they’re eager to discuss their artistic processes, share their inspirations, and reveal their latest projects. It’s a rare opportunity to engage with the creative minds behind the art and gain insight into their craft.
But GOS 2023 isn’t just about art; it’s a celebration of resilience. Many Gowanus artists faced devastating flood damage in their studios, especially at 540 President Street, home to Arts Gowanus. This event highlights their strength and determination to overcome adversity. (FYI: If you want to show your support, consider contributing directly to the affected artists by visiting this link.)
As you explore the neighborhood’s artistic wonders, you’ll come across seven murals created by local artists, adding to the vibrant tapestry of Gowanus. The event also gives back to the community through initiatives like Gowanus Mutual Aid’s MetroCard drive and Be the Match’s bone marrow donor registry.
Wrap up your weekend on a high note by attending the closing party at The Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse (162 2nd Street), overlooking the iconic Gowanus Canal. It’s the perfect way to end a weekend filled with art, community and creativity.
With venues spanning from Pacific Street to 19th Street, and from Smith all the way to 5th Avenue, getting around Gowanus Open Studios is a breeze. Over 8,000 printed maps will be distributed throughout the neighborhood to help you navigate the diverse locations. Additionally, a digital map and a list of curated self-guided tours will be available on artsgowanus.org, making it easier than ever to tailor your art-filled adventure.
Don’t miss your chance to immerse yourself in the creative energy of Gowanus, where art knows no bounds. Gowanus Open Studios 2023 promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Brooklyn’s artistic spirit.
