Father John Misty Releases New Single, Short Film and Video, With New Album Coming Soon
Here’s some more good news for 2017, which is shaping up to be a good year for indie rock: two years after the release of his great album I Love You, Honeybear, Father John Misty is back on his grind. The third album, titled Pure Comedy will be out on April 7th via Sub Pop, and he’s already up to his usual eccentric ways in early promotion of the record.
The announcement for the new album, which will clock in at 75 minutes long, comes closely after FJM—also known as Josh Tillman—shared both a video for the titular lead single, as well as a 25-minute short film that shares its name with the new record.
As a song, “Pure Comedy” is absolutely classic Father John Misty. It’s an immersive piano ballad, one that sucks you in and lasts for over six minutes, but really doesn’t feel anywhere near that long. It’s got a little Elton John in it, to be honest, and that’s of course a great thing. It’s got that signature sense of humor that’s always so prevalent in his music, and it’s simply a joy to listen to. The video isn’t much different, features all kinds of funny and eccentric imagery of today’s news cycle, including but not limited to: Trump, Obama, Kanye, and strange internet memes.
Meanwhile, the short film, which was directed by Grant James and Tillman himself, sees the musician in a number of different settings, and is a worthy watch with your time during today’s lunch break:
