Keep Seeing: Good Art Happenings & Shows This Week
Keep seeing, keep looking! This is a weekly, mostly Brooklyn-based compendium of art happenings.
FORTNIGHT INSTITUTE: DICKS — EXHIBITION & DISCUSSION
It’s a good time to consider the dick. Look at a lot of them—trapped in rock, sketched, oiled, bent, squashed, hard, soft and more—at Fortnight Institute’s show, featuring eight artists (one of them male). Tonight, six of those women (Elizabeth Berdann, Mira Schor, Aurel Schmidt, Aura Rosenberg, and Betty Tompkins) will discuss the dick. RSVP required.
Discussion: 6:00PM — 8:00PM Wednesday, November 16; exhibition open through December 6 / UPDATED / December 15, 2016. Image: Nicole Wittenberg, Mr. Limpy, 2016
MRS. GALLERY: MORE — SARAH BEDFORD + TRACY MILLER
These two mid-career artists share an astonishing amount of everything, from material to subject to gender to success. Their drawings and paintings are busy and thoughtful, tender and sometimes wild. There’s a lot of wiggling and morphing: this life is not very still after all.
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 19 6:00PM — 9:00PM; Exhibition open through January 28, 2017. Image: (L) Tracy Miller, Jelly Roll, 2016 (R) Sarah Bedford, Fruit and Striped Vase, 2016.

THE WHITNEY: PERMANENT COLLECTIONS, LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT — ANNETTE LEMIEUX
Annette’s signs—photographs of fists going this way and that, from all eras—have been turned upside down (at her request) following the election results. The fists belong to Martin Luther King, Jr., Richard Nixon, Jane Fonda, Miss America and other, unnamed people. Was it ever a united front? What were we protesting a week ago? What are we protesting now?
On view, and upside down, now until — ?

315 GALLERY: BEHOLDER’S SHARE
This group show includes Ezra Tessler, Lauren Seiden, Mark Starling and Caitlin Macbride, and promises to dissect the vagaries of communication. How does a message get from here to there, and how is it received, when the “here” is so different from the “there”? The idea that we are all “in our own studios” is more resonant than ever.
Opening Friday, November 18 8:00PM — 10:00PM.
BUDDHIST INSIGHTS, ROCKAWAY: U-PAINT
This is not a show! But it’s necessary, and involves painting. This weekend, Buddhist Insights, a relatively new organization that hosts free buddhist meditation workshops and talks, is asking for volunteers to paint their new home in the Rockaways. There will also be some meditating, and conversation. Sometimes, to be present for others, you first have to be present for yourself: this offers the opportunity to do both.
