Watch Carly Rae Jepsen Long To Be “Your Type”
I used to be one of those people who thought Carly Rae Jepsen was a one-hit wonder. Then, tracks off her new album E•MO•TION began to trickle into the universe and I was floored by them. It’s well worth your time to check out her entire new disco-smeared pop album, but today she’s shared a new video for “Your Type” so let’s focus on this track in particular.
This should’ve been a video that captured all the love, lust and longing that erupts when you don’t fit into someone’s romantic ideal, but instead it’s a muddled accounting of one girl’s pop star fantasy bookended by a faux Lebowski narrator and stolen headphones. I once called Jepsen the most hapless pop star we have, when writing about an equally tepid video for another great E•MO•TION track. I stand by that even though I’m deeply in love with this album, and you should watch the video, regardless, because you get to listen to the song while it plays. “Your Type” is the ultimate self-deprecating funk-pop ballad; it fluctuates between adoration and hurt with a vulnerability that those caught between those two poles themselves will immediately latch onto.
