The Best Shows This Weekend: A Labor Day Primer
Sticking around this holiday weekend? You’re not alone. For the thousands who won’t be trekking to seaside bungalows or cabins in the woods somewhere, there’s still plenty to look forward to in New York City. Namely, the music. Here, a quick primer on some of the best live music to see during the last, long days of summer.
1. Single Mothers @ Brooklyn Bazaar, 8/29
If nothing else, Ontario-based punk rockers Single Mothers are guaranteed to be loud. What more can you ask for on a hot Friday night? Oh yeah, for it to be free. With Baltimore’s Dope Body opening. Skip the lines, RSVP here.
2. Joanna Gruesome @Southstreet Seaport,8/29
Maximize enjoyment of summer’s final day — go see Joanna Gruesome’s cheery, screamy live show on a big stage, outdoors. While you’re at it, take in the sea breeze, up-and-coming punk rockers Big Ups, and more than a few Salty Dogs (probably). You’ll have the extra cash to spare, because the show is (again) free.
3. Teengirl Fantasy @ Baby’s All Right,8/30
Dance away your Saturday night to some smooth, sultry, electro-infused pop music. With Tessela spinning records, this party will probably go late, and you’ll probably go home sweaty. Tickets available in advance here.
4. No Joy @ Brooklyn Bazaar, 8/30
Contrary to their name, No Joy actually bring a lot of Joy — especially live and especially when free. Like all Brooklyn Bazaar’s summer line up, this one is loud, costs nothing, and you can stuff your face with artisanal tacos and hot dogs from the multitude of surrounding food vendors. Can’t beat it. RSVP here.
5. Crocodiles @ Baby’s All Right, 8/31
Once based in LA, but now finding their way in Brooklyn, lo-fi scuzz rockers Crocodiles are sure to bring down the house on Sunday night. Expect lots of stripes, sunglasses worn indoors, and really, really good tunes. Tickets available in advance here.
6. Danny Brown @ 50 Kent, 8/1
Celebrate the holiday in style with this powerhouse line up: Danny Brown, AraabMuzik, Brenmar, Young Gleesh, and tons more. Things start early (3 PM), but are probably going all night. Early bird special is sold out, but advance tickets still available here. (Side note: this event is put on by Fool’s Gold in collaboration with Northside Media Group, which is — ya know — us. Still, it’s gonna be fun, so we’ll see you there?)
7. Boris @ La Marina, 8/1
For those who like their music loud, angular, and relentless — don’t miss Boris playing at an uptown beach. Soak in the last of the summer rays while slowly going deaf to this joyful noise. We highly recommend. Tickets available here.
